Murphy's Oil is vegetable oil based and Ballistol is mineral oil based, so it probably permeates the fouling better and softens it up making the cleanup easier. It will attract what moisture is in the air and then that moisture will cling to the fowling that is clinging to that bare steel, those causing rust.

Both black powder and the substitutes require proper cleaning with water soon after firing. I don't find one any easier than the other to clean.
