WebIn 2011, the EcoFINDERS (FP7) project sampled 76 sites across 11 European countries, covering five biogeographical zones (Alpine, Atlantic, Boreal, Continental and Mediterranean) and three land-uses (arable, grass, forestry). Samples collected from across these sites ranged in soil properties; soil organic carbon (SOC), pH and texture. Webare being used within EcoFINDERS to assess soil biodiversity and functioning. One of the major expected outputs of EcoFINDERS is to deliver Standard Operating Procedures for characterisation of microbial and faunal diversity. There is, a major need for standardisation to make data obtained in various sites and different locations comparable. WebHowever, it is becoming clear that a research effort focusing on plant traits (and especially of roots), as will be done in EcoFinders, offers a potential way forward for understanding how plant-microbial-soil interactions might be manipulated to enhance soil carbon storage.
