Just undo the bolts on the top panel by turning them counterclockwise (left) with a ratchet and appropriately-sized socket, then pull up on the shield to lift it away from its seat. If your heat shield broke off, that may mean your manifold bolts are also broken and then you manifold may leak after a while. That's what happened to mine.
