They are a rubber/plastic substance, made out of resin. Not wood, at all. They look okay, and they shouldn't make any difference in the sound and playability of the guitar. A month later I obtained the spec sheet for my guitar’s serial number from Martin (for an unrelated question), and it listed the fingerboard as FSC Certified Richlite (it also lists the guitar as a DCPA4 Custom). Accordingly, for the past ~8 months, I assumed it was a Richlite board.

It is pretty much as hard as ebony, and if you want to have it black, it will take India ink as a dye. I've made fretboards from it.
